Ethereum-based arena battler game Moonray is now responsible for the largest free gaming NFT mint on OpenSea to date, after users minted some 220,629 “Jadeon Adam” character skins over a 48-hour period.

This NFT mint gave players an earthy green in-game character skin that they can wear while fighting. The free NFTs, minted on Coinbase's Ethereum layer-2 network Base, were claimed between November 19-21.

Moonray is an Ethereum-based combat arena game available on PC via the Epic Games Store. It has previously run a play-to-airdrop campaign, rewarding players’ in-game progression for a slice of its soon-to-launch MNRY token, and has released NFTs that have provided small perks and bonuses.

“NFT-based game items, skins and more allow players to truly own their items, making it one of the best ways for mainstream adoption of crypto and digital collectibles,” OpenSea Head of Gaming Oliver Maroney said, in a statement.

The game is also set to launch on PS5 next year, albeit without crypto features at launch. Due to Sony’s crypto limitations, the skin will only be available to use in the PC version of the game.

Moonray originally launched as the “first Bitcoin metaverse,” as it focused on action role-playing elements and was being built on Bitcoin layer-2 network Stacks. But the game pivoted away from this approach to focus on combat and migrated to Ethereum.

Such a move allowed the game to launch NFTs on OpenSea, as the marketplace doesn’t offer any Bitcoin integration. Now it’s reached a sizable number of players via the giveaway.

“The team is ecstatic by the reception in our community and all the players that showed up and minted this limited edition collection,” Hans Andersson, founder and CBO of Moonray, said in a statement. “The OpenSea team is absolutely fantastic and the support they provided leading up to this mint has been amazing.”
